What are the different armor plate levels — III, III+ and IV?
NIJ Level III plates stop rifle rounds like 7.62x51 FMJ, Level III+ adds special threats such as 5.56 M855 and M193, and Level IV defeats armor-piercing .30-06 AP. Every Ace Link Armor plate is independently tested to NIJ Standard 0101.06, with its exact rating listed on the product page.
Will an armor plate stop an AR-15 or AK-47 round?
Yes — that is exactly what rifle plates are for. Our Level III+ plates defeat 5.56 (M193 and M855) and 7.62x39 threats, while Level IV ceramic plates also stop armor-piercing rifle rounds. Soft Level IIIA armor alone will not stop rifle fire.
Are armor plates legal for civilians to own?
Yes. Civilians in 49 of 50 states can legally purchase and own body armor plates, with Connecticut requiring in-person purchase. Federal law only prohibits possession by convicted felons, so check your state and local laws before ordering.
Ceramic vs polyethylene armor plates — which should I choose?
Ceramic composite plates offer the highest protection levels, including Level IV against armor-piercing rounds, at a moderate weight. Polyethylene (PE) plates are ultra-light and buoyant but top out at lower rifle ratings. Unlike steel, neither produces dangerous spall when hit.
What is the difference between single-curve and multi-curve plates?
A single-curve plate bends on one axis and suits flatter torsos, while a multi-curve plate is shaped around the chest and shoulder for a closer, more comfortable fit during long wear. Protection is identical — the difference is ergonomics and price.
What size armor plate do I need?
Most adults run a standard 10x12 SAPI-cut plate; larger frames may prefer 11x14. Measure from your sternal notch to about an inch above your navel and match that to the plate height, then confirm your plate carrier is rated for that plate size.
How much do armor plates weigh?
Weight depends on level and material. Our lightweight Level III+ special-threat plates start around 3.5 lbs, while Level IV ceramic 10x12 plates typically weigh 7-8 lbs each. Lower weight means less fatigue, which is why ceramic and PE composites have replaced steel.
How long do armor plates last?
Ace Link Armor hard plates carry a 5-year manufacturer warranty when stored and used as directed. Ceramic and composite materials are durable, but you should inspect plates regularly and replace any plate that has been dropped hard, cracked, or shot.
What are side armor plates and do I need them?
Side plates are smaller 6x6 or 6x8 inserts that ride in your carrier's cummerbund to protect the ribs and vital organs from lateral shots. They are standard for military and SWAT loadouts and a popular add-on for anyone wanting more than front-and-back coverage.
Are your plates standalone, or do they need soft armor behind them?
Ace Link Armor plates are rated standalone — they achieve their full NIJ protection level on their own, with no soft armor backer required. In-conjunction (ICW) plates from other makers only meet their rating when paired with a soft panel, so check this before buying.
What is the difference between hard armor plates and soft armor?
Soft armor is flexible aramid or PE rated Level IIIA for handgun rounds, worn concealed or in vest carriers. Hard armor plates are rigid rifle-rated inserts for plate carriers. Many users combine both — a IIIA vest for daily wear and rifle plates for high-threat situations.
How should I store and care for armor plates?
Store plates flat or properly supported in a carrier, away from extreme heat, moisture, and direct sunlight. Never use a plate as a tool or seat, avoid dropping it on hard surfaces, and inspect the strike face and edges for cracks or delamination before each use.
