Added protection is something any body armor wearer welcomes and would like to hear from their command. When it comes to being issued anything that will enhance their odds at survival out in the battlefield or the streets, the soft or hard trauma plate, also often know as a ballistic plate or body armor plate, is a step in the right direction when up armoring your troops. These armor products come in a number of different protection levels, such as NIJ level IIIA, Level IV, or NIJ level III ballistic plates.
The cost of equipping troops with body armor is not low, add to that the small undertakings of, logistics, and support involved, requires a complex and intricate process, taking into account differing sizes needed, the purpose of the body armor being worn, and the availablility and turnaround to equip your department or division with quality proven ballistic protection. Add the option of up armoring each of these vests with trauma plate inserts and the added costs could relegate budgets past projected amounts. But the benefit of added trauma mitigation with trauma plates for bulletproof vests are astronomical in itself, and could mean the difference between a soldier or agent staying in the gunfight through trauma dispersal, or becoming combat-ineffective due to blunt force trauma.
Normally, ballistic vests are available upon issuance or purchase, at least one trauma plate insert- typically for concealable vests this is standard, depending on manufacturer. Most often than not, current bulletproof vest require purchase of the trauma plates as an option and with added costs due to the advanced nature of today’s trauma plates. Ballistic trauma plate inserts may come in steel trauma plate; usually heavier but able to reduce or prevent blunt force and even edged-weapon penetration protection; or the trauma plate can be a soft trauma plate panel designed to reduce the felt and resulting back face deformation resulting from ballistic or blunt force trauma impacts.
There is constant testing and advancements in reducing or eliminating blunt force trauma resulting in severe or extreme ballistic impacts such as with rifle fire, or shotgun blasts at close range. These trauma plate level 4 panels are designed to up armor the Rifle grade Level 4 Plates from impact and felt shock upon the wearer facing constant threat of rifle fire in the battlefield or SWAT call-out.
